What is a Prosthodontist?

The American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined by a general dentist at least twice a year. These visits are essential for preventing serious oral health complications. However, even if you take exceptional care of your teeth, problems can still arise. When this happens, a specialist is needed. At Prosthodontic Dental Group, we have several specialists to help address a variety of issues, including prosthodontists.

What is a prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics is one of 9 different dental specialties. A prosthodontist is a dentist that specializes in both restoring damaged teeth and replacing missing teeth, effectively helping you to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. While all dentists attend four years of dental school, a prosthodontist goes on to receive an additional 3 or more years of education and training. During this time, prosthodontists attend formal classes and receive training in the field.

Fixing Damaged Teeth

When your teeth suffer damage, bacteria can get inside, which can compromise both your oral and your overall health. Once inside the tooth, the bacteria can irritate the pulp, causing it to become inflamed. This leads to a painful infection. Damaged teeth can also affect the beauty of your smile, and your confidence. Common fixes for tooth damage include:
•  Dental bonding. Bonding is a quick, simple procedure that uses composite resin to fix minor cosmetic issues.
•  Veneers. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed on the fronts of your visible teeth. They are used to correct minor issues in your teeth.
•  Dental crowns. A dental crown is a cap that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth. The crown works to hold the tooth together and provide it with strength, preventing infections as well as further damage.

Tooth Replacement

When you lose your teeth, just about every aspect of your life is affected. Even losing just one single tooth can have major consequences for your oral health, overall health, and your appearance. Missing teeth can make simple everyday tasks, including eating and speaking, difficult. Tooth loss also has dire consequences for the health of your jawbone. When you lose teeth, you lose bone mass. The bone weakens and begins to change shape. This can lead to tooth misalignment, an off bite, bruxism, jaw pain, and more. To restore the health and beauty of your mouth, it is important that missing teeth be replaced right away.

Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

There are several different options available for replacing missing teeth:
•  Bridge. A bridge is a restoration designed to replace one to three missing teeth. While there are a few different types of bridges, a fixed bridge is the most common. Typically made from ceramic, your replacement tooth (pontic tooth) is set between two dental crowns. The crowns anchor the restoration in place.
•  Partial denture. A partial denture is a removable prosthetic device used to replace sections of missing teeth. Replacement teeth are set into a gum-colored base which is supported by your gums. Partial dentures also have metal clasps that hook on to your healthy teeth, providing additional support.
•  Full denture. A full denture is a removable prosthetic device used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Much like a partial denture, your replacement teeth are set into a gum-colored base that is supported by your gums.
•  Dental implants. Dental implants are the newest option for tooth replacement. They are small titanium rods that are inserted into your jawbone using a surgical procedure. As you heal, the bone fuses to the titanium, turning the implants into roots that then support replacement crowns.
